M1 Abrams (United States)

The US M1 Abrams battle tank has been developed by the American company General Dynamics and entered the U.S. Army in 1980. The tank is combat proven and recognized as the best tank world wide.
The Abrams is in service with large armed forces: United States (7900 vehicles), Australia and Saudi-Arabia. There are 3 versions of the M1 Abrams tank. The M1 (standard), the M1A1 and the M1A2 as the most advanced version.

M1A1

The upgrade to M1A1 includes: increased armor protection, suspension improvements, a nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) protection system that increases survivability. The M1A1D modification consists of an M1A1 with integrated computer and a far-target-designation capability.

M1A2
The M1A2 has: 120mm canon, improved tank protection, NBC protection, a commanders terminal vision, an improved commanders weapon station, position navigation, and a digital databus and radio interface unit to improve the M1A2 capabilities at the battlefield. In the future they also want to expand with a warmth vision equipment.

Australia
The Australian Army has ordered 59 M1A1 Abram tanks by General Dynamic Land systems. These tanks will be delivered to the army in june and december 2006. The abrams tanks will replace the leopard 1 tanks. The M1A1 abrams tanks will be second-hands tanks from the United States Army which will be completely disassembled, overhauled and refurbished to like-new “zero-mileage” condition.
These tanks have a cruise range of more than 480km, the ability to reach speeds of 66 kph on-road and up to 48 kph off-road (while carrying a crew of four and ammunition). They will be delivered with a 120 mm smooth-bore canon and are also armored with a .50 caliber machine gun and 2x 7.62mm machine guns. The tank can use advanced kinetic energy ammunition.
