The F100 turbofan engine with afterburner was specially developed for the US Air Force F-15 and F-16 fighter jets. Currently there are the 3 versions: F100-PW-200, F100-PW-220, F100-PW-229 from Pratt & Whitney. All engines are 2-shaft engines with afterburner and variable geometric nozzle. The newest type, the F100-PW-229 is used on the Advanced F-16's Block 52. |

The
engine is a low-bypass twin-spool (low and high pressure compressor) turbofan
engine with afterburner.
Features The P&W F100 engine has a full length annular type fan, a 3-stage low pressure compressor (with the fan driven by the LPT on the N1-axis), a 10-stage high pressure compressor (driven by the HPT on the N2-axis), an annular type combustion chamber, 2-stage low pressure turbine, 2-stage high pressure turbine, afterburner and a variable geometric nozzle. To avoid compressor stall there has been build in a solution. The startengine is coupled to the HPC. Thanks to this the N2-axis will rotate first. Later, the LPC will also rotate thanks to aerodynamic coupling. The Royal Netherlands Air Force uses the F100-PW-200 (photo 1).
