The L-39 was the standard trainer of the Soviet Union, Czechoslavakia and other former Warsaw Pact countries between 1971 and 1973.

Operators
The L-39 is / was in service with:

1. Slovakia
2. Hungary

and the armed forces of:

Vietnam, Syria, Iraq, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Algeria, Bulgaria, Cuba, Ethiopia, Libya, Nigeria, and Romania.

1. Slovakia
The air force of Slovakia has the ability of 15 L-39ZA trainers which will be updated under the Moder program.

2. Hungary
In 1993, the Hungarian air force received 24 ex-East-German Air Force L-39's. The Last L-39 was withdrawn from operational service in 2009.
