Amerikaanse Special Forces

De Amerikaanse militaire special forces zijn allen ondergebracht bij het United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM). SOCOM bestaat uit:

- Army Special Operations Command
- Air Force Special Operations Command
- Naval Special Operations Command
- Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command
- Joint Special Operations Command

SOCOM bestaat verreweg voor het grootste deel uit Army troepen (26,800) gevolgt door de Air Force (10,500 troepen), de Navy (6.300 troepen) en het Marine Corps (<50 troepen). Het Joint SOC bestaat uit troepen uit de hiervoor genoemde commando's.

Army Special Operations Command
Het US Army Special Operationn Command (USASOC) is gehuisvestigd op Army Base Fort Bragg. Het USASOC is verder onderverdeeld in (bekende eenheden gemarkeerd):

- Special Forces Command
- Special Operations Command
- 95th Civil Affairs Brigade
- 75th Ranger Regiment (Army Rangers)
- 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (externe link)
- 4th Physological Operations Group
- Special Operations Support Command
- JFK Special Warfare Center and school

Het 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR) is uitgerust met MH-6, AH-6, MH-60 en MH-47 helikopters.

Air Force Special Operations Command
Het US Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) is uitgerust met speciale vliegtuig versies. Het onderdeel is verder onderverdeeld in:
- 27th Special Operations Wing
- 1st Special Operations wing
- 720th Special Tactics Group
- USAF Special Operations School
- 18th Flight Test Squadron
- 352nd Special Operations Groep (Engeland)
- 353rd Special Operations Groep (Japan)

De onderdelen leveren minder ondersteuning aan grond of zeetroepen zoals de normale Luchtmacht. Het AFSOC is uitgerust met de speciale vliegtuigen:

EC-130 Compass Call (Elektronische oorglogvoering)
HC-130P (bijtanken)
MC-130 Combat Talon (Infiltratie en exfiltratie)
MC-130P Combat Shadow (bijtanken van helikopters)

Naast het AFSOC heeft de Amerikaanse Luchtmacht (USAF) ook andere middelen om militaire speciale eenheden en de geheime dienst (CIA) te ondersteunen. Dit zijn onder andere:

U-2 Dragon Lady
Predator

Naval Special Operations Command
Het Naval Special Operations Command (NSOC) bestaat voor 44% uit Navy Seals (Navy Seals)

Joint Special Operations Command
Een bekend onderdeel is het 1st Special Operations Detachement- Delta (1st SFOD-D) ook wel bekend onder de naam Delta Force (Delta Force)
